Armored Truck

The armored truck, a vehicle belonging to the Depository Bank of Zurich, becomes the primary means of escape for Robert Langdon and Sophie Neveu after they retrieve the keystone from the bank's vault. Its heavy-duty construction and anonymous appearance allow them to evade immediate capture, but its built-in tracking system ultimately leads the police to their location at Château Villette.

Escape from the Bank

After Langdon and Sophie successfully access Jacques Saunière's safe-deposit box and retrieve the rosewood box containing the cryptex, bank president André Vernet agrees to help them leave the premises. He instructs them to hide in the cargo hold of one of the bank's small armored trucks, which he then drives out of the underground garage. At the roadblock, Vernet, disguised in a driver's uniform, convinces Lieutenant Collet that the truck is sealed and that he has no keys to the cargo area, allowing them to pass through the police cordon. Once clear, Vernet drives the truck to a wooded area, where he pulls a gun on Langdon and Sophie, demanding the return of the box. Langdon and Sophie manage to overpower Vernet and escape in the truck, driving it themselves toward the estate of Sir Leigh Teabing.

Abandonment at Château Villette

Langdon and Sophie drive the armored truck to Château Villette, where they park it in a grove of trees near the top of the driveway to avoid being spotted from the road. They leave the truck behind when they enter the estate, and it is later discovered by Lieutenant Collet's agents, who trace the vehicle's transponder. The discovery of the truck confirms that Langdon and Sophie are on the property, leading to the police surrounding the château. The truck's presence also reveals that the pair had escaped the bank in the vehicle, contradicting Vernet's earlier claim that they had been turned away.

Narrative Significance

The armored truck serves as a crucial plot device, enabling Langdon and Sophie's initial escape from the bank and providing a temporary safe haven. Its built-in transponder, however, becomes a liability, allowing the police to track them to Teabing's estate. The truck's role highlights the tension between the characters' need for mobility and the constant threat of surveillance, a theme that runs throughout the novel. Its abandonment at Château Villette marks a turning point, as the police close in on the estate, forcing Langdon and Sophie to flee again, this time in Teabing's Range Rover.
